Set a good example for your children and take them cycling
Plan a cycling self catering holiday and you can enjoy a good family break that not only gets everyone doing something together but also builds a foundation for the future. Children may well continue cycling as they get older and maintain that level of fitness.
Cycling in the British countryside
Cycling along country paths can be a great activity for holidays. Hilly landscapes may offer the best views but can be the most physically arduous when cycling. In the UK cycle paths are few and far between which means that most cyclists have to take to the roads. Again cycle lanes on UK roads are few and far between. Hopefully in the future this situation will improve but facilities in the UK for cyclists are not great currently. Always wear an appropriate bicycle helmet that fits well and avoid cycling at night or at dusk where cycles are not always easily seen by drivers. If you must cycle at dusk or in the evening make sure that the bike you are using has appropriate safety lighting and that you have fluorescent clothing..
If you wish to stay off the roads, again do your research, you may be able to find bridleways that can be used by both cyclists and walkers. This is the preferable option for those who do not like the thought of cycling along the road with cars.
General Activity Breaks
An activity break which includes cycling makes for a superb family holiday. Any national park break offers miles of bridleway and footpath, ideal for mountain biking. There is also the option of orienteering, wildlife spotting, pony trekking, aerial adventures in tree tops such as 'Go Ape', quad biking and in some locations canoeing or in hilly places such as the Peak District, hang gliding for adults.
One of the nicest places for a cycling break with plenty of traffic free trails is the New Forest in the South of England. Cyclist go there in their hundreds, complete families cycle the woodland trails hoping to spot ponies and deer. Read about it on the New Forest self-catering site and see the lovely scenery.
